Not long ago, I went to my doctor to ask for testosterone. I was tired of feeling flat, foggy and weak since menopause and wanted support with energy, focus, muscle retention, bone density, libido, all the things that make me feel like myself again.
Her first suggestion? That I read a book called Come As You Are. Yes, really. A book on desire and orgasms. Now, I love a good read, but I did not go in looking for a book club recommendation. I went in asking for help with a chemical imbalance.
She did write me a prescription, but when I went to collect it, it was not testosterone at all. It was Intrarosa, a vaginal insert for painful sex. And sure, that might help one slice of the problem, but it is not the whole picture and it was not what I asked for. Most frustrating of all, she never explained the switch, never told me what it was or how to use it.
Moments like this are why it matters so much that we advocate for ourselves in the doctor’s office. We deserve to be listened to. We deserve to have honest conversations about what is really going on with our bodies. This is a crucial step for any woman navigating perimenopause and menopause.
